You might not remember the days when the only choice of coffee was between instant or filter, but if you do then all the coffees on choice these days might be baffling. So here is my rundown of the main ones so anyone who usually sticks to white with one can try something new next time they’re in the coffee shop.

First up is the lovely latte. Latte is the Italian word for milk and so a cafe latte is simply a milky coffee. Comforting, soothing and sweet, a cafe latte is essentially an espresso combined with steamed milk and topped off with milk froth. They are often topped off with chocolate powder and served in a tall glass.

Like your milk but prefer a bit of chocolate too, then the mocha is the one for you. It has a similar split of coffee to milk as the latte but with the added pep of a shot of chocolate to make it that little bit sweeter.

Completely different to the mocha and latte is the espresso, which is short, dark and bitter. An espresso is served in a short measure and is created from beans which have been roasted until dark brown.

The less popular, but no less delicious macchiato sits somewhere between the espresso and cappuccino and is an espresso with a small amount of milk added. The macchiato takes its name from the Italian for marked as the espresso is marked with milk- giving a less intense hit.

The Americano is another slight tweak on the classic espresso, and is made by adding hot water to an espresso to give the strength of filter coffee, but with the taste of an espresso. It takes it’s name from the World War 2 soldiers who drank it.

And finally, the most popular on my list, is cappuccino. Cappuccinos are made by combining equal measures of hot coffee and hot milk, finishing with frothed milk and a delicious sprinkling of chocolate powder.
